AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE AND DEATH

«  I remember when I was a child, I used to like watching Westerns. One day I heard that « the only good Indian is a dead Indian ». It shocked me at the time, because I liked the Indians, I found them more beautiful than the cow boys. It intrigued me as well. I found out later that even president Roosevelt, had at some point made a reference to this sentence.

This relationship to the Indians (native Americans), opened my eyes to this capitalist market machine which crushes everything that stands on its path, including Americans of European origin.

In fact if we turn that sentence around saying A GOOD AMERICAN IS A DEAD AMERICAN, it becomes shocking because we do not see the Indians anymore, we see the European-like Americans who’ve been dominating America. And so I entitled a series of portrait A GOOD AMERICAN IS A DEAD AMERICAN. I started with Lincoln, then Martin Luther king, Malcom X, John Kennedy, then I portrayed the Indian Chiefs who fought the American army.

Someone like Geronimo, who spent his life fighting the American army, in the end,  got killed in a very twisted way. Because he got integrated into an American circus show which was called « Wild West ». In this show Geronimo was playing the part of the Indian. He was dressed up as "the Indian" and played the part. Doing so, he turned into  an allegorical figure of all these people who stood up to the capitalist market machine, but ended up being crushed by it, one way or another. Either killed by bullets like Sitting Bull, or simply killed by the market logic. »
